Mariano Rivera has appeared in many all star games and world series, but according to him, last nights game ranks in the top of his career. Rivera threw a scoreless eight inning which contributed to his career E.R.A. of 0.00 in 9 career innings in the all star game. Rivera entered the field all by himself only accompanied by the song enter sandman which has been his introduction song throughout his career. He received a huge ovation from the entire crowd at Citi Field including both all star teams. Both the A.L. and N.L. all stars stood on the field near the dugout to applaud Rivera.
In a very emotional situation, Rivera was still able to do what he does best, jam hitters with his cut-fastball which is the pitch that will carry him to the Hall of Fame. Whether you like him on the Yankees or not, you have to respect what he has done over the course of his career. When Mariano comes into the game in the 9th, 99% of the time the game is over.
Sure he is human and will blow the occasional save but overall he has been the most dominant closer of all time. Even though he is retiring at the end of the season, he still looks like he would be able to compete at the MLB level for a very long time. The consistency he has provided at closer for the New York Yankees will be sorely missed.
